In my last article I ended promising you some information on leather tiles so here it is. I must also say that researching this material was very exciting! The variety of colors, textures and patterns was phenomenal…it almost brought me to tears! Pathetic, I know, but it’s the little things that speak to my designer’s heart.

I meet business owners all over the city. I meet a very talkative woman in a self-serve frozen yogurt shop where she is creating these chocolate dipped pretzels from scratch. She confirms the rumors about how cheap it is to live here. It is also extremely laid back. People are extremely polite and friendly and they even interact with living objects that aren’t cellphones. It’s like being in a UFO.
Decide which inside corner is going to be the least noticeable in the finished room. This is where you want to start since it is not always possible to get a good match on the pattern with the last piece. Exterior Doors are normally coped at inside corners and lapped at straight joints. DO NOT COPE OR LAP POLYURETHANE MOLDINGS.
Let there be light. Place several lamps around the room for an inexpensive way to create a space filled with warmth and comfort. If you opt for three way lighting, each lamp can serve a dual purpose: a brighter setting will provide working light when you need it, and a lower setting will create an intimate ambiance when you want to make the room feel even more cozy.
Now the most important parts…maintenance and cost! The cost is subjective to the company. Some sell by the tile and others by the square foot. Edelman leather, which is widely known in the design community, sells by the tile and you can only get through people in the design trade, i.e. interior designers like me, architects, builders, and contractors. Another company I found, Black Stock Leather, sells to the public, and by the square foot. The prices range from about $32 to around $67 per square foot. It is a bit expensive, but if it’s in your budget, its well worth the cost!
Don’t forget to protect your wood moldings with painters tape, remove all the covers from the electrical outlets and plugs and cover the floor and furniture with drop cloths!
